Bones are in a constant state of formation and breakdown. Old bone cells are taken away and new ones take their place. Several factors affect the strength of our bones. These start early in infancy and childhood. Most important are genetic factors, nutrition mainly calcium and vitamin D and levels of physical activity.

There are acquired factors e.g. medications like steroids, anti seizure medications, prostate cancer treatment that cause bone loss.

Medical conditions that cause bone loss are menopause, overactive thyroid gland, overactive parathyroid gland, Cushing’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoporosis and Vitamin D deficiency are the two most bone diseases.
