LASER TURP – For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

TURP, or Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate, is a minimally invasive procedure done to remove sections of an enlarged prostate in men. TURP is performed using a resectoscope which is guided towards the prostate through the urethra and then used to remove the excess prostate. It means there are no incisions required in this procedure.

During Laser prostate surgery, a laser is passed through the tube and is used to resect the abnormally grown portions of the prostate. The procedure is mostly performed to treat a condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

    What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

The prostate is an important gland in men that is situated below the bladder. It surrounds the topmost portion of the urethra, which drains urine from the bladder. The prostate performs the important function of producing the seminal fluid that nourishes & transports sperm.

As men grow older and reach the age of 50 and 60 years, their prostate glands may grow larger. As the prostate gland sits below the bladder, this condition can cause difficulty in urination, like pain while urinating, blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder, and other urinary tract and kidney-related issues. The condition mostly affects older men and can be treated effectively with medications and minimally invasive procedures like Laser TURP.

“One must note though that this type of age-related enlargement of the prostate is not a precursor to prostate cancer.”

    Causes of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

There is no specific cause related to benign prostatic hyperplasia except age. The condition usually only occurs in older men. It is thought that as men grow older, their hormonal balance changes, which may cause abnormal enlargement of the prostate gland.

About the Laser TURP Procedure at Apollo Hospitals, Karnataka

Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a common procedure performed by expert doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Karnataka. To perform a TURP surgery, doctors need special training. Our team of doctors is highly trained and experienced in performing such procedures.

    Pre-Procedure

Our doctors carefully evaluate the patients based on their medical history and by performing a series of tests to diagnose benign prostatic hyperplasia. Once the surgery is scheduled, the doctors will inform the patient about the dos and don’ts before the surgery. The doctors will take complete information for the existing medications of the patient, and certain medications may be stopped a few weeks before the TURP procedure. The patient will also be asked to fast from the night before the surgery.

    During the Procedure

The patient will be given general or spinal anaesthesia for TURP, and mostly spinal anaesthesia is the preferred choice. The doctors will then insert a resectoscope for the urethra and will guide it towards the prostate. A resectoscope is a thin and flexible metal tube containing a light, camera, and laser source. With the help of a laser passed from the tube in the resectoscope, an enlarged section of the prostate will be cut. Sometimes, this laser beam is used to shrink or remove the excess tissue. A urinary catheter is then placed in the urethra to pump fluid into the bladder and flush away pieces of the prostate that have been cut or removed during the procedure.

    Postoperative TURP Care

Once the procedure is completed, the patient will be transferred to our fully equipped recovery rooms. Our expert nursing staff will be available round the clock to monitor the patients. The doctors will also regularly check on the patient.

Patients are usually kept in the hospital for 1-3 days after the TURP procedure. However, some patients can even be discharged on the same day, depending on their condition. The urinary catheter may have to remain attached for up to 1 week afterwards. It may be removed early as per the discretion of the doctors. Medications and recovery care instructions will be provided by our doctor in detail.

The doctors will advise the patient to stay away from strenuous activities, lifting heavy weights, etc., for some time. Full recovery may take up to 3-4 weeks.
