Congenital deformities and deficiencies (right from birth as seen in Children) are several- unseparated fingers, short fingers, absent fingers or thumb, cleft hands, multiple fingers, deformities of the wrist and hand (e.g., Radial or Ulna Club hand), etc. Cerebral palsy confirmed after the first birthday of the child may be associated with tightness and deformity of the hand. These need early conservative treatment with special splints and occasionally require hand surgery later.
Acquired deformities are commonly due to hand injury in farms, factories, industries, road traffic accidents and rarely during recreation or at home. Altercations and assaults are also now commonplace. Early assessment and attention by a Hand Specialist followed by good Hand therapy and Hand rehabilitation restores the anticipated function.
